Owl and Penguin

There’s no doubt about it: this recipe takes patience, a sharp knife, and probably a fair amount of practice. However, once you have it mastered, you won’t be disappointed that you tried!

Directions:

  1. Slice off the very bottom end of one mini-watermelon to create a sturdy base. Outline the front part of the owl on the front of the watermelon with a food-safe marker. Carve the face of the owl, and carve the body based on your outline, leaving enough white for definition. Create small hatch marks all along the body portion.
  2. Outline the feather locations on either side of the body, and then cut small wedges of rind out. Attach blueberries and orange peels to the face for the eyes and a carrot nose. Use tooth picks to attach.
  3. Slice the bottom off of one green apple to create a base. Carefully carve it into the shape of a penguin, working your way from the top down. Slice a ring out of a plum and place this on top of the penguins head. Cut a red apple in half, and place this cut side down on top, securing with toothpicks if necessary.
  4. Add blueberries, red apple rounds, and a carrot to complete the bow tie, eyes and nose.
