Kiwano melons are spiny little things, which can cause people to glance in shock and walk right on by when in the produce section. However, the interior jelly-green fruit is crisp, tart, and refreshing, and when coupled with it’s already artistic detail, it makes for a fantastic carved fruit!
Directions:
- Rinse one kiwano melon thoroughly and pat dry. Cut off the upper quarter of the kiwano, and shave the other end slightly so that the melon sits flat.
- Use a vegetable peeler to create apple discs, and secure these, along with blueberries, to the head piece with toothpicks.
- Insert toothpicks for ears, and striped fuzzy craft sticks for the arms.
- Rest the head piece, a bit off center, on the body of the fruit and serve.
This goes perfectly with a more elaborate fruit platter; however, it’s also a great addition to a multi-course meal, as kiwano is a fantastic palate cleanser between courses. Enjoy!
